About At Hermans
When Edward and Lily Herman the 5th of November 1948 opened their first interior design shop on 7th avenue in New York, it was a lifelong dream that came true for “The Hermans”
Prior to the opening had been many nights and weekend in the company of their close friends Ray and Charles Eames, where the ideas for the coming Herman shops were founded. Both couples appreciated the minimalistic, clean and stylish design (as Danish design was also known as) and it was based on this that the bought products for their first shop on 7th avenue.
This focus brought Edward and Lily over the atlantic many times during the years following the opening where Copenhagen was their favorite city to visit for inspiration. It was on one of these visits they were able to visit the offices of Arne Jacobsen, a visit that made a big impact on their future ideas of what products they wanted to sell.
Over the next 40 years Hermans opened 4 other shops in the New York area and until the last shop closed when Edward and Lily retired – in 1991 – Hermans was THE place to visit for the interior and design loving New Yorker looking for something beautiful for their home.
It's precisely Edward and Lilly's commitment and focus on what good design is (and should be), we have chosen to pursue further online. It is our tribute to the most innovative and trendsetting interior shops New York has ever seen. And we will, as Herman did it, do our best to inspire you, give you tips and ideas and of course allow you to also buy some of the things that make our home even more cozy.
We are happy for your visit and appreciate feedback and ideas.
Thank you
